Bullies in the Workplace

She explains, “The ‘bully’ term implies they intend to do harm. In fact, this is not what I’ve found. Essentially, they are blind to the impact of their behavior on others. Generally, they don’t see it.”

The Mind of the Bully
The bully boss, according to Crawshaw, displays overaggressive behavior out of fear, not confidence.
“When they get anxious about how they’re going to be perceived, they attack,” Crawshaw says. “It’s helpful for people who are subordinates to realize it’s not their problem — it’s the boss’ problem.”

I disagree with the author’s observation that -
“Essentially, they (bullies) are blind to the impact of their behavior on others. Generally, they don’t see it.”
This statement is NOT true of REAL bullies but is typical of a boss who is simply arrogant, believing the importance of their position entitles them to treat subordinates as handmaidens. Their rudeness is not premeditated, and is often intensified by their stress level. They do not intend to hurt others, and often don’t realize that they are. When their bad behavior is pointed out to them, they are remorseful and apologize.
Then there are REAL bullies who are so much more than simply arrogant and rude and are far from “blind to the impact of their behavior.” To the contrary, their intention is to not only hurt their targets, but to destroy them. REAL bullies don’t apologize and are not remorseful, many having no capacity to feel empathy, at all. These facts are hard for most of us to believe because real bullies do not think in the same way as normal people.
REAL bullies, such as a “closet, serial, bully boss,” are motivated by emotional or physical mental health disorders having a level of psychopathy, also referred to as sociopathy. Bullies are the key players and the driving force behind the “phenomenon” referred to as “workplace bullying and mobbing.” This phenomenon consists of repeated, complex campaigns of emotional abuse involving coworkers who are manipulated by the bully to unwittingly participate. There are striking similarities case to case, as well as a predictable pattern and sequence of events. Bullies are literally entertained by the conflicts they create, the troubled response of the target, and their ability to get away with any blame.
Make no mistake about it. REAL Bullies are dangerous, using a type of violence that most people are unfamiliar with and cannot recognize, which puts them at risk. It’s my hope that someday all working Americans will learn enough, to be able to Recognize it, Name it, and End Workplace Bullying and Mobbing Together!
